After I checked the students’ video guides for Technology during the Market Revolution, I spent a few minutes reviewing the PowerPoint with them. At the Erie Canal portion of the PowerPoint, I had to take a few minutes to play the Erie Canal Song, since we live so close to the Canal. We discussed inter and intrastate trade again and the role of the federal government, or lack thereof in each. When I felt that students had a good grasp of the material we moved on to break down Andrew Jackson’s Maysville Road Veto.
Students then completed one of my favorite activities – haikus. They were given several topics to choose from and selected four. ( Market Revolution Transportation and Technology Assignment) It was an interesting sight that at any given moment students were counting syllables on their fingers to ensure they met the 5-7-5 quota. A few students finished early and got a head start on their homework, but most worked until the end.
