While I checked the students’ homework, they worked on 3 multiple-choice questions about Manifest Destiny. These questions required them to interpret information from a map. All of the students got a 2/3 or a 3/3. In addition to answering the questions, I had the students re-write the questions in their own words.
We spent a few minutes reviewing answers to the Compromise of 1850 Quick Assessment (Compromise of 1850 Big Idea Questions). When we finished, the students worked on an assignment titled “Who would favor: The North or South?” (Who would favor- The North or South?)Students were given 17 terms and had to decide if the North, South, or both would favor each term. When we reviewed the terms as a class I asked students to explain why they placed the term where they did. The last ten minutes of class were spent discussing the Dred Scott decision and its impacts.
